The Russian Blue is a breed of cat with a very distinctive silver-blue coat and an aristocratic look. They are gentle, genteel, deeply bonded to their owners, but known to be reserved around strangers. They are also highly intelligent and very playful cats, fastidious and easy to care for.
The Russian Blue is a naturally occurring breed that reportedly originated in the port of Arkhangelsk, Russia, and thus are sometimes referred to as Archangel Blues. The first Russian Blues are believed to have been brought to England and Northern Europe by sailors in the 1860s. The first European showing of the cat was as the Archangel Cat at the Crystal Palace in England in 1875.
The breed was developed mainly in Russia and Scandinavia prior to World War II. Although Russian Blues were in America before the war, it was after the war that American breeders began to work on developing the modern Russian Blue that we see today, by continuing the bloodlines of the Scandinavian and English Russian Blues. Breeding two Russian Blues together will always produce Russian Blue kittens, whereas breeding with any other kind of cat will produce kittens that have the non-Russian Blue coat.
Both Russian Whites and Russian Blacks have been created through cross-breeding, and by the late 1970s, the Russian White and Russian Black colors were accepted by cat fanciers in Australia as Russian cats (in different classes). However, only the authentic Russian Blue is accepted by the Cat Fanciers Association in North America.
The coat of the Russian Blue is blue-gray, short, and plush, and is known as a "double-coat." The undercoat is soft, downy, and equal in length to the guard-hairs of the overcoat, which is an even blue with silver tips that shimmer and dance in the light. I have read that one can actually "draw pictures" in the coat as long as the cat has the patience for it—that the fur will lie down in response to pressure from the fingertips. The tail has subtle, almost unnoticeable stripes, and the eyes are almost always a dark, vivid green. Russia Blues are strikingly beautiful cats!
When Russian Blues are with their own beloved humans, they are affectionate, playful, and joyful. They are active, but not infuriatingly so. They like nothing better than to spend time retrieving a favorite toy or chasing a sunbeam. They can willingly entertain themselves for hours, but much prefer to have their favorite humans join in the fun. When the owner is at home, they will follow around, unobtrusive but always there.
The breed is known for its high intelligence, curiosity, and tranquility. They are very sensitive to human emotions, and are very loyal. They do well with children, and enjoy having other pets in the household as well. Quiet and clean, they shed little, but do love to be brushed. Their average life expectancy is around ten to fifteen years, and the breed is not prone to any particular health risks.
Russian Blues appreciate having a daily routine, and dislike environmental changes more than the average cat. They want their dinner ON TIME, thank you very much, and their litter boxes to be fastidiously clean. They are polite, quiet, and well-mannered, and can be trained to stay off counters and other places you don’t want them to be with a simple "no" command. They also believe that politeness should go both ways, and do not appreciate being made to look silly. These are cats with great dignity, who appreciate being treated with dignity as well!
Betty Clement, of "Azurerusse Russian Blues," and I, had a spirited conversation about this wonderful breed that she has raised since 1988.
The first observation she made--as well as the last--is that Russian Blues look like "moving pieces of art," because of the striking silver tips at the ends of their guard hairs, and the magnificent conformation of their bodies.
Loving, sweet, and kind, they are active without being too rambunctious—in short, said Betty, "Everything a cat ought to be." She confirmed that they are extremely responsive to your commands; if invited, they are delighted to sit on your lap, but will immediately respond to a "no" command as well.
She said that Russian Blues have very distinctive personalities, with clear likes and dislikes that they make known. For example, among her own Russian Blues is one cat who loves to sleep on a pillow between her masters’ heads, and another who always chooses to sleep under the covers. Extremely sensitive to the masters’ needs, Russian Blues will "minister to you" if you are ill, and respond appropriately to your changing moods.
Betty emphasized that Russian Blues need the companionship of other cats, as well as that of humans. "The only thing better than a Russian Blue," she stated, "Is TWO Russian Blues!" While this is surely true, a second cat of any kind will serve as an excellent companion for the breed, as they are not that picky. She also confirmed that Russian Blues are very low-maintenance and are not genetically prone to any particular illnesses or infirmities, and added that some people with cat allergies have reported that their allergies are less active in response to Russian Blues than to many other breeds of cat.
For anyone seeking a quiet, elegant, well-behaved, intelligent, curious, and loyal feline companion, the Russian Blue certainly seems to fit the bill perfectly. Betty Clement & I would surely agree!
