Training the All-Purpose Tracker

Every dog owner recognizes how prominently that nose is placed on his dog's face, and so it is that scenting is an inherited ability of every dog. Whether tracking deer or raccoon, wounded prey, fallen game, a blood trail, a designated object or a lost child in the woods, a dog approaches each task in the same manner. Author Don Abney, a master trainer in the fields of tracking, hunting, search and rescue, and detector work uses his proven methods of training to lay the foundation to identify specific scents which the dog will track to its origin.

Inside you will find the anatomy and function of the dog's nose. Knowing how the nose works helps you in understanding what the dog is doing. A presentation on scent patterns, your selecting the right puppy for the right job, handling and storing scent, as well as understanding the sources of scent. There is also information on competitive tracking, first aid, and a glossary of tracking terms.

If you want to teach your dog to run a track, or if you are experienced at tracking, this book will help you. The information contained in this book is exactly the way we teach dogs for clients that hunt, track competitively, or use their dogs for Search and Rescue.
