About Us

A BREEDERS LIFE.........

A Breeder (with a capital B) is one who thirsts for knowledge and never really knows it all, one who wrestles with decisions of conscience, convenience, and commitment. One that shares this knowledge and guides those interested.

A Breeder is one who sacrifices personal interests, finances, time, friendships, fancy furniture, and deep pile carpeting! She gives up the dreams of a long luxurious cruise in favor of turning that all important show into this year's "vacation".

The Breeder goes without sleep in hours spent planning a breeding or watching anxiously over the birth process, and afterwards, over every little wiggle or cry.

The Breeder skips dinner parties because that litter is due or the babies have to be fed at eight. She disregards birth fluids and puts mouth to mouth, to save a gasping newborn, literally blowing life into a tiny helpless creature that may be the culmination of a lifetime of dreams.

A Breeder's lap is a marvelous place where dogs of proud and noble heritage often snooze.

A Breeder's hands are strong and firm and often soiled, but ever so gentle and sensitive to the thrusts of a puppy's wet nose.

A Breeder's back and knees are usually arthritic from bending and sitting in the whelping box, but are strong enough to guide that new little pup to maturity.

A Breeder's shoulders are often heaped with responsibility, but they're wide enough to support the weight of a thousand defeats and frustrations.

A Breeder's arms are always able to wield a mop, support an armful of puppies, or lend a helping hand to a newcomer.

A Breeder's ears are wondrous things, sometimes red (from being talked about), or strangely shaped (from being pressed against a phone receiver). Often deaf to criticism, yet always fine tuned to the whimper of an anxious puppy.

A Breeder's brain is foggy on faces, but can recall pedigrees faster than an IBM computer.

The Breeder's heart is often broken, but it beats strongly with hope everlasting.......and it's always in the right place! Oh, yes, there are breeders, and then, there are Breeders!!!

The Breeders of SugarNSpice Chihuahuas have decades of experience breeding/showing and raising superior quality dogs.  We are addicted to puppy breath, endlessly fascinated by genetics and animal husbandry, and we teach each other constantly.  It's a joy and a privilege to keep and breed these precious toys, and we never tire of the thanks and praise we get from the families we share our babies with.  (See our letters/references from buyers.)  This is a great hobby we've been able to share with our kids and extended families, and the wonderful friends we've made in the sport of purebred dogs.  We air ship safely after 12 weeks old.

We reserve the right to refuse to sell our puppies or provide service to anyone we feel won't follow our instructions on care, or be responsible pet owners, or anyone we perceive as mean.  We give our Chihuahuas super premium care and food and supplements, and lifestyles, and require that they continue to be treated better than most humans are.  We want them to have pampered pet lives, and they only go to loving, affectionate people.

A couple of our team of Breeders have computers, several do not have computers (and say they are too old to learn) , so several people will have their dogs and puppies posted here.  We are willing to mentor and share with people who want to breed, but since Chihuahuas are fragile babies, and the mortality rate is higher than other breeds, we only recommend breeding to those, who like us, are completely committed to the breed, and absolutely dedicated, willing to suffer, and stay up nights, and spend embarrassing amounts of money to do it right.  You must stay at home to breed Chihuahuas, or have babysitters.  Pet Chihuahuas are not sold with full registration for their future safety.  If you want a show/breeding full AKC Chihuahua be prepared to prove your show history and/or provide vet and other references.  We don't sell to pet stores, resellers, or puppy mills.  If you just want to try breeding "one litter", we recommend you try another breed.

We do have Champions and multiple show winners.  We have some of the best pedigrees in the country, but we don't just breed for show.  Our goal is extra pretty Chihuahuas, who are healthy, happy, and loving.  We won't sacrifice health or temperament to acquire show traits.  We like to win, but we want to create puppies who are a joy to live with even more.

We get tiny ones who end up 1 1/2 - 4 lbs. full grown, and while buyers call them t-cups, we are only supposed to call them small Chihuahuas.  All Chihuahuas are toys, according to the Chihuahua Club of America and AKC and CKC, and Breeders are scolded and criticized if we respond to the buyer's terms and call them teacups.  Frankly, a 2 lb. grown dog (baby 12 oz. to 1 lb. at 12 weeks) in our opinion, should be called a t-cup so people are aware they are very fragile and breakable (like china), less hardy, and less likely to live the extra long life of a 5-6 lb grown Chihuahua (which can be18-20 years).

We charge very high prices for small Chihuahuas, because # 1. they require lots of extra care from tube feeding as runt newborns, to all night intensive care sessions every time they are wormed or vaccinated.  (Ask your vet what he'd charge to keep and raise one for 3-4 months, and you'll quickly find out why they are $1500 and up.  #2. They are rare, because many breeders lose theirs to low blood sugar, or infections from normal flora, or Modified live virus vaccines, since they have weaker immune systems.  It takes a lot of care to get them to live and be healthy.  # 3. They are in much demand, and there is a big shortage, we shoot for 4 - 6 lb. size grown, so we get little ones due to breeding very small 3 lb. sires to first time moms to avoid c-sections, or to get the traits we want, but not because we breed for t-cups...so don't bother to ask us for a "cheap t-cup."  And # 4. Because when we've sold them for less money, we've seen their photos posted on the sites of puppy brokers, and resellers, and other breeders, at a higher price.  It helps us avoid our puppies being resold for a profit, and keeps us in the loop in deciding who they'll live with, if we price near the top of the market, so we can't be tricked by a reseller.
