| In
the 1970's, field studies in western Turkey,
suggested that these great white dogs are closely related to the
other white guard breeds in Europe; namely the Greek
Sheepdog, the Hungarian Kuvasz, the Slovakian Chuvatch, the
Polish Tatra, the Italian Maremma, and the French Great
Pyrenees. Modern Turkish Sheepdogs represent a fusion
between a so-called "original" dog of prehistoric times
found in the Archaeological and migratory records and of
imported dogs brought into Asia Minor by various
civilizations that invaded and occupied the ancient land
bridge between East and West. Early archaeological records
show that the domestic dog was living well within the
borders of Turkey (Asia Minor) as early as 7000 B.C. which
represent some of the earliest dog finds in the world. The Kangal Dog, the National Dog of Turkey, and the Mongolian
Herd Dog are probably of the Mastiff family. Because many
of the similar elements are found in the Akbash breed, they have
elements of the Mastiff family which would make it one of
the oldest dogs known to man during our evaluation. |

The
puppies are now 33 weeks old and about 45-50 pounds
each and need to find good new home soon with
the herd or flock that you would like them to
protect, since they need to adjust to the new breed
of animals. I try to work with my new owners with
the transportation issue and weight and size is a
significant issue here.

I
am personally impressed with
the breed’s lineage and would
like to see that it be preserved as much as possible in
the true current form without crossbreeding.
Standing a minimum of 30 inches (dogs) at the withers and
weighing an average 110 pounds, the Akbash Dog is a tall,
long-legged dog combining elements of the mastiff type with
a suggestion of the sighthound given its grace, speed, keen
eyesight, and ability to run down fleet animals, such as the
american coyote. Females range from 27”-29” in height and
weigh 75-110 pounds and the Males are 28”- 32” in height and
weigh 90-140 pounds plus both are all white.
Old time Sheepherders wish to have white dogs in order to
avoid confusing them with wild animals, since, when the wolf
attacks in the twilight, it is important that there be a
color difference between the dog and the wolf.
