The Presa Canario was first developed by the Spaniards in the Canary Islands. The Presa was considered a Butcher’s dog in the 16th century. The butcher used the dog to “catch cattle".

During the beginning of the 20th century to the mid 20th century, the Presa Canario was used for dog fighting. During this period, the Presa was interbred with other fighting breeds to increase his fighting ability and to better its catch ability.

Presently, the Presa Canario is being used as a companion/guardian. These dogs are very dominant. They need someone who can train them without being heavy handed.

Presently, we are using three Presa Canarios in our breeding program. A fawn male and two females, one brindle and one fawn. The male has a lot of prey drive in comparison to the two females. All three Presa Canarios here at DRY GULCH have a great temperament.

They are safe around people both adults and children. However, these dogs should never be left without supervision when children are around.

My Presas are registered with the Federation of International Canines. The Presa Canario can also be registered with the AKC stock breed. This means that you can show your Presa in AKC agility and obedience but not for confirmation.
