An ancient breed that was originally a hunting and farm dog, the Norrbottenspets has been used to hunt various types of grouse, and fox and squirrel as well. Since the early 17th century when the breed was first documented, Finland and Sweden have argued about the breed's true origins. According to history, the Norrbottenspets originated in Kainuuland/Lappland, Finland, and Norrbotten, Sweden, but because the dog has spent significant time in both countries, it's difficult to say which wss its country of origin. Primarily used as hunting companions, the breed almost became extinct following World War I, like many other purebred dogs.
Sweden closed its studbook in 1948 because of the small number of Norrbottenspets. A few of them were preserved, but were in the far north where the population did not speak Swedish; at this time the Norrbottenspets were mostly companions and farm dogs. In the 1950s and early 1960s, those who were enthusiastic about the breed sought out some of the remaining dogs and began a breeding program that met with great success. In 1966, the FCI confirmed a new breed standard and it was at this time that the name of the breed officially became the Norrbottenspets.
In 1973, Finland accepted and began registering dogs after the new breed standard was written and the breed accepted for registration in 1967 by the Swedish Kennel Club. Known as Pohjanpystykorva in Finland, breeding of the Norrbottenspets is highly controlled and great effort is given to protecting the health of the Norrbottenspets breed. Sweden also holds to very strict breeding practices in an effort to preserve the integrity of the breed.
Well-muscled and small, a Norrbottenspets puppy grows to be a compact dog that looks almost square in shape, much because its height and length are almost equal. This breed has a moderately long muzzle that tapers off to a point, a broad, wedge-shaped skull and black nose.
The Norrbottenspets is a breed with two coats, the undercoat being thick, soft and fine. A rough overcoat is straight and fits close to the body. The double coat helps keep the dog warm and well insulated in extremely harsh, cold weather. The neck is covered by dense, thick hair giving the dog's neck a thick appearance, although it is actually short and slender. With a tail that curls loosely over the back, the long hair on the tail gives it a bushy look. The hair on the back of thighs and neck is slightly longer than the rest of the body as well.
In most cases,Norrbottenspets puppies are primarily white, with reddish brown or yellow-red markings, but other colors in marking are permitted as well. Height varies from about 16 inches to 18 inches at the withers, with females being a bit shorter than males. This breed typically weighs between 18 and 33 pounds; females generally do not weigh more than 27 pounds.

However, those who enjoy hunting will find the Norrbottenspets the perfect companion, as they love to hunt too.

Families with children who enjoy sports will find this breed the perfect pet, and your pet is likely to find you the ideal family as well if you're active and enjoy outdoor life. Generally speaking, this is a breed with few health concerns, and one that lives a long life in terms of dog years. Most Norrbottenspets puppies will age to live 12 to 15 years, and some as many as 20! The few health issues your pet may encounter include hip dysplasia, patellar luxation (dislocation of the knee), and common joint problems like arthritis.
The only grooming your dog will need is regular brushing, more frequently during the two times each year the breed sheds heavily. Brushing a few times a week will remove dead hair and keep your pet neat and well-groomed. Check ears occasionally and clean when needed.
