The Herding Group

All dogs developed for specific tasks, including those bred to herd livestock, were originally part of the AKC's Working Group. Towards the end of the 20th century (1983) the organization separated these livestock specialists into a group of their own.

The animals in this group all herd, yet they have different ways of doing that job. Border Collies are famous for their stare, which gets cattle to market across the wide open spaces of the American West. The Canaan Dog is bred to move sheep across the deserts of Africa and the Middle East. The fur of the Puli makes it nearly impossible for a predator to get to its flesh. In short, the Herding Group are as different as the animals they guard and the prey they defend them from.

The core trait of all successful herding dogs is intellect. They are trained when young, and from then on, they make their own decisions based on that information, their instincts and the circumstances. This makes them wonderful family pets and intelligent companions.
