Featured Breed - Sphynx

The Sphynx, or Canadian Hairless, is a cat breed most easily identified as "hairless." The breed's look can be attributed to a natural genetic mutation which first appeared in a litter born to a domestic cat in the year 1966 in Toronto, Canada.

Despite their reputation, the Sphynx isn't altogether hairless. Properly kept, the Sphynx' fine, down-like fuzz covers their tender, warm skin to give these cats a sort of "chamois" feel. Their unique condition requires an extra amount of care on behalf of their owners, as the breed's lack of fur gives them very little resistance from elements such as the sun or the cold. Because of this, Sphynx are typically kept as indoor-only pets. The Sphynx' skin secretes much higher amounts of oil than other cat breeds will, and frequent bathing is necessary.

Yet, the Sphynx' physical attributes aren't the only thing that sets this magnificent breed apart. Sphynx seem to share an inherent curiosity for the world- a sort of inquisitive appreciation for the world around them. As if all eyes in the room weren't already on them, Sphynx relish the opportunity to bask in the limelight and soak up attention. Their silly, at times even mischievous, antics can occupy your attention for hours. Affectionate and dotingly receptive, the unique personality of the Sphynx never fails to surprise.

Since its origination, the Sphynx' popularity has grown consistently, and in 2002, the breed achieved acceptance for competition by the CFA. The breed's appearance as the character Mr. Bigglesworth in the movie Austin Powers helped to make the Sphynx a household name, though the breed remains a rare breed of cat.
