Not a cat person? The Savannah may just be the right cat
for you. Owners of this oversized feline claim that they behave, "more like
dogs than cats," reportedly enjoying such activities as water-play and going
out for a stroll on a leash.
If you've ever been face to face with a Savannah, chances are, you remember it. These cats have an exotic appearance, and mystique few would fail to depict as mesmerizing. The breeds’ claim to fame? An impressively beautiful coat, characterized by a pattern of solid spots, provides the breed with an undeniably "leopard-like" appearance. Adding to the Savannah's persona are legs of an almost gangly nature, along with oversized ears, and a relatively small, triangle-shaped head.
Named after the very location their wild ancestors inhabited, popularity of the Savannah has grown increasingly since the breeds’ development during the 1980's. Current-day Savannahs tout a price tag of several thousands of dollars each!
As if a steep bill weren't enough for Savannah fans to have to work around, Savannahs often grow to reach an intimidating 40lbs. upon maturity. That's more than twice the size of a typical house cat! With the ability to jump six feet from a standing start, it comes as no surprise why the neighbor might be weary about having a Savannah next door.
Communities across the globe are divided about how or why to regulate these animals. Legislation concerning the breeding, importation, and even ownership of the Savannah has become increasingly strict in many U.S. cities and states. Finding one of these cats- and neighbors nice enough to keep hush-hush about it- can be a real cat-enthusiast's challenge. A recent bill passed by the Australian authorities has altogether banned importation of the breed in order to protect indigenous wildlife and fauna from Savannah "predators."
