The Russian Blue is a medium-sized breed of cat of the foreign-type.
This breed's plush, blue-grey, coat is
naturally-occurring, and appears to have an almost shimmery appearance
thanks to each individual hair's silver-tip. Those given the opportunity to
pet or pick-up a member of the breed are almost always surprised to find
that an imprint of their own hand has been left on the feline's coat. The
amazing density of their double coat is what makes this possible.
While sometimes easily confused with two other, naturally-occurring breeds of cat known as the Korat and the Chartreux, the Russian Blue possesses many unique traits. They are a fine-boned feline whose actual weight is commonly overestimated, primarily in-part due to the 45° angle their short coat grows out at. Two sets of small, slightly rounded paws provide the Russian Blue with a moderately dainty and lithe sort of appearance. The breed's eyes are deep, and vivid-green in hue.
At the time of the breed's first appearance within the English show ring in 1875, these cats were still referred to as the, "Archangel Cat."
Ancestors of the breed are believed to have originated in Russia; however, the majority of today's Russian Blues have developed from bloodlines originally established in both Scandinavia and England following the end of WWII.
