Featured Breed - Presa Canario

The Perro de Presa Canario, also know as the Canary Dog, or Presa Canario for short, is a powerful dog breed of the "molosser" type. Developed as early as the 18th century, these dogs were used as an all-purpose, working breed of the Canary Islands.

A solid, well-muscled, and well-balanced build is characteristic of the breed. Their structure and locomotion has often been noted for baring a uniquely cat-like resemblance. This can mostly be attributed to a longer body length than height, as well as, a distinct and sloping topline commonly shared by all members of the breed. Additional similarities include the shape of the Presa's paws, which appear in the shape of a "cat foot," and a saunter-like stride or gait.

One of the Presa's most notable traits lies in its wide, impressively massive, and powerful head. Proper head shape, size, and facial expression are of the utmost importance, and are easily identified in each of the breed's finest specimens.

While the Perro de Presa Canario's popularity has endured many setbacks, the breed was finally granted admittance into the AKC's Foundation Stock Service under the Working Group designation in the year1996. The majority of today's Presa utilize their naturally commanding demeanor to serve as protectors of the family and home.
