For the most part, the appearance of the Italian Greyhound embodies a miniaturized version of its larger cousin, the Greyhound. These lanky, lean dogs represent the smallest member of the sight hound family, and typically grow to reach just above 2' in height at less than 11lbs. in weight once fully mature.
Just like other breeds of the sight hound family, the Italian Greyhound runs with what is called a double suspension gallop. This is a special stride that allows all four of the dog's legs to leave the ground at the same time. It is this high-stepping, graceful gait that allows the Italian Greyhound to reach top speeds of up to 25mph!
The Italian ancestry of the Italian Greyhound can be traced back for more than 2,000 years. Painters such as Velasquez, Pisanello, & Giotto have each found inspiration in the breed's elegance and image.
The breed has also been quite popular with royalty. These fans have included Queen Victoria, Catherine the Great, Queen Maud, and Mary, Queen of Scots.
