At first glance, many may think the Egyptian Mau bares a very close resemblance to the Ocicat or Bengal. Further consideration, however, reveals otherwise, as the Mau's distinct and very unique appearance becomes evident.
In fact, the Egyptian Mau represents the only breed of
domestic feline that appears with naturally occurring spots. This means that
unlike the Bengal or Ocicat (which have achieved their markings through
selective breeding) the Egyptian Mau's spots can be seen on both its skin
and its coat. This coat can be seen in a variety of 5 colors, ranging from
silver, bronze, smoke, black, or blue/pewter.
Yet another trademark of the breed is a characteristic, "scarab beetle" or "M"-shaped marking embellishing the Mau's forehead. A striking set of green eyes completes the aesthetic of the breed. The breed's size and stature fit somewhere in-between the svelte sophistication of the Siamese and the comfortable, compactness of the Burmese.
Known as the fastest of all domestic feline breeds, the Mau has been clocked at reaching up to 30mph at top speeds. This increased agility and speed can be attributed to a flap of skin extending from the breed's flank to its rear knee. Longer hind legs than front are also said to give the breed the appearance of walking on the tips of its toes.
Widely known for exhibiting a diverse musical intonation, Egyptian Mau are said to chirp, prattle, and produce many more interesting and very amusing noises when provoked.
