Whether Smooth, Long, or Wirehaired, the Dachshund can be
seen in a wide assortment of colors, as well as, patterns, ranging from a
red, to black-and-tan, to cream, chocolate, rust, copper, fawn, to blue.
Typically
growing to reach no more than 35lbs. in weight, the relatively loud bark and
courageous vigor frequently exhibited by the Dachshund has led it's owners
to fondly refer to them as, "big dogs in small packages."
Ancestry of the Dachshund breed can be traced back to as early as the 1500's, as is accurately depicted in the breed's name, which translates from German to read, "Badger Dog." It was the stature, stamina, and fearlessness of the Dachshund breed that led German foresters, gamekeepers, and sportsmen to so highly value and breed these oddly-proportioned dogs for hunting badger and other small vermin.
A revival following a decline experienced by the breed during WWI and WWII fortunately persevered, and today, the breed ranks as the 6th most popular breed registered with the AKC, two years and running!
Dachshunds and their fans have been scattered throughout modern history- just two famous Dachshunds include "Lump" the pet of famous painter Pablo Picasso, and the 1972 Summer Olympics mascot, "Waldi." Walt Disney's 1966 adaptation of author Gladys Bronwyn Stern's novel The Ugly Dachshund features a whole family of adorable Doxies, while famous cartoonist Gary Larson also seemed to have had an affinity for the breed, as featured numerous times in his "Far Side" comic series.
