The Collie is a highly intelligent dog breed most commonly recognized for its role in the hit 1950's television series, "Lassie."
Fabling the adventures of a young boy and his heroic pet Collie, "Lassie"
aired for seven consecutive years, and won Emmy awards in the years 1954 and
1955. The man behind the show's heart-touching story? A man
named Eric Knight- author of the book the show was based on- who raised
Collies with his wife on their farm in Pennsylvania. The character of
"Lassie," is said to have been inspired by Knight's own Collie, "Toots."
Much like the television character the breed was so artfully immortalized by, the Collie owns a sort of intuitive, instinctively motivated demeanor of all their own.
The breed originated in the west and northernmost regions of Britain, and proved an impressively keen and loyal asset to farm and livestock owners. Easily trained, with the endurance, to match, the Collie developed primarily as a working breed. Known as the, "Scottish Sheepdog," until the 1800's, the breed is sometimes more formally referred to as the "Rough Collie.”
Today's Collie specializes in a variety of additional applications- from agility, to show-ring, to pet. Their infamously gentle and kind-natured temperament ideally suits these dogs for a long list of situations.
