Featured Breed - British Shorthair

Today’s British Shorthair is a descendant of a hardy, street-savvy cat said to have traveled to Great Britain along with the Romans during the time of their occupation.

The breed’s following increasingly grew as years past, and by 1871, organizers of London’s Crystal Palace cat show deemed them eligible for competition. The breed has remained a staple within show-rings ever since, and was granted champion status by the CFA in 1980.

The presence of the British Shorthair is both calm and quiet. A docile nature, trademark appearance, and tendency to be quick-to-train have primed these cats for their work in film and television productions.

The semi-cobby stature of the British Shorthair is one of solidarity. A round head with broad chest, shoulders, and hips positioned atop a set of strong, albeit (comparatively) short legs work to provide this breed with a physique that has often been compared to that of a football player.

Prominent whisker pads adorning the British Shorthair's chubby cheeks have been attributed for its archetypal smile. This image is thought to have been the model for writer Lewis Carroll’s Cheshire Cat, appearing in his 1865 publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
