The Beagle is a short, compact scent hound with an unmistakably outgoing nature. These dogs are recognized around the globe for coupling an acute sense of smell with a very personable and sweet disposition.
Used to track and hunt hare, pheasant,
quail, rabbits, fox, and
even
raccoons, Beagles own a loud, very unique howl (also known as a
baying cry)
that has been highly sought-after by hunting horsemen. Historically, the
regal ties of the Beagle can be traced back through literature, as well as,
through the arts, of both the 16th & 17th Centuries. Members of the British
monarchy- including Queen Elizabeth I, Edward II, and Henry VII- are each
said to have been avid fans of their very own packs of Pocket Beagles, Glove
Beagles, or Singing Beagles.
Just how specialized the Beagle's nose? Beagles have the ability to recognize a variety of nearly 50 distinct scents. They can even detect smells that are too faint to be sensed by scientific equipment
The, "Beagle Brigade," started as a branch of the APHIS airport inspection program in 1984, represents a prime example of just how accurate the Beagle's nose can be. This highly trained team of Beagles work alongside their handlers in 21 major airports throughout the country to identify travelers whom baggage may contain contaminated items such as meat, animal byproducts, fruits, or vegetables. Altogether, this team is said to recover around 75,000 seizures of prohibited agriculture each year.
