An Owner's White German Shepherd Description
Snow is not your typical German Shepherd. Besides her snow white coat, she has a very unique personality. Now maybe I'm prejudiced, but she is much more affectionate than other dogs that I've had. I've always owned German Shepherds, but Snow is my first White Shepherd. As I think back and recall the other dogs, they weren't as sweet-natured as Snow. They were just as protective and just as willing to do whatever was asked of them. But Snow is much more of a people dog.
And even more than that, she seems to connect with my emotions and feelings. If I'm a bit low or depressed, she'll sense that and simply lay her head in my lap or place her paw on me as if reassuring me that it's going to be okay and that she's there for me. Maybe it's something in her eyes that relays a sense of compassion that the other dogs just didn't convey. I believe Snow actually cares.
The best thing is that Snow is really still just a pup, only about nine months old. She is so mature for her age! She still likes to play and will get a bit wound up if too much time goes by just sitting. But I think that as she grows, her ability to understand others' feeling will only intensify. She would make an excellent service dog with her natural compassion for people. I wonder if it's just her, or if this unique sense is common for her breed. Either way, I know I have a really special companion and friend.
Introduction
Similar to the traditional German Shepherd Dog, these dogs are snow-white with black nose, eyes, and lips ; some also have black nails. The height at the shoulders is 21 to 25 inches. They are all around working, herding and service dogs. Steady of nerve and completely good natured, White German Shepherds are also alert. They need frequent grooming due to their double coat. This breed is very good with children and are especially protective. They make great watch dogs and home companions.
History
The solid white German Shepherd arose periodically in the breeding of the black/tan Shepherds as a recessive gene. Breeders focused on continuing the occurrence, selecting dogs for the white color. All white shepherds share a common ancestry, which began with a herding dog named Grief, whose grandson Horand von Grafrath is the source of all of today's White German Shepherd dogs.
Loyalty of those who are devoted to these unique looking animals has led to the creation of breed clubs in Europe, Canada and the US. Breed recognition by any of the major kennel organizations remains elusive.
Description
The German Shepherd is a strong, muscled, agile dog. It is longer than it is tall and presents an appearance dominated by curves rather than angles. It is a sturdy and substantial dog and appears fit and nimble without looking clumsy. German Shepherds have domed foreheads, long and square muzzles, and black noses. They have very strong jaws, and their eyes are usually brown and of medium size. The dogs have long ears that stand erect, open in front, and rise when they are excited. They have a long neck and a bushy tail. All German Shepherds have a double coat, with the outer coat shedding all year. White German Shepherds have a dense straight outercoat that lies close to the body; the undercoat is dense and thick. Males may have a slight 'ruff' - hair denser and longer around the neck. While pure white is preferred, colors run from the palest cream to light biscuit (tan). Noses, lips, eyes and eye rims are black.
Temperament
German Shepherds are very active and self-assured dogs. They are very eager to learn and they like to have a purpose. They are loyal and bond strongly with the people they know. They may be overly protective of their families and territory, however; they do not readily become friends with strangers. They are very obedient and are not distracted easily, but their single-mindedness requires firmness during training.
Health and Care
Most of the health problems suffered by German Shepherds are the result of inbreeding, so it is crucial to get a dog from a registered breeder. A common problem is hip and elbow dysplasia, which can lead to pain as the dog gets older. The dogs may also develop arthritis. Shepherds have a tendency to ear infections because of their large, open ears. They need regular combings with a shedding blade, but only an occasional bath.
