An Owner's West Highland White Terrier Description
Just in case you don't know it by now, trust me: you can't just have one Westie! They are so cute, adorable and pint-sized that two Westies will still leave you room to spare, even in the most cramped quarters. I should know, I live in a 900 sq. ft. apartment with a dynamic Westie duo!

My two cuties are named Maggie and Marshall. They are sister and brother. I just don't know if I can really describe how special they are, and how wonderful this breed is. First off, they are pint-sized so that even when they bark, they are pleasant, which is a good thing in an apartment complex. They are not 'hyper' like many small dog breeds. When I take the two of them in the car Maggie (my trouble maker) likes to have the driver's seat. When it's safe, I'll let her lurch on the steering wheel. She really likes to pretend she's driving.

If it's raining and I turn my windshield wipers on, they both go nuts trying to catch the wipers. They are really observant and they don't miss a thing. Something moves, they have to react. It's just funny the things animals will do on their own. My life certainly is not boring with these two! My company maintains a 'pet friendly' environment, so they get to go to work with me instead of staying home alone as many dogs must. There are roughly 100 employees where I work and just about everyone seems to have a dog, but Maggie and Marshall are on the top 10 list of 'Company Favorite Pets'. The list was developed to encourage dog owners to discipline their dogs to maintain appropriate behavior in the workplace. Despite their clowning around, my Maggie and Marshall know their manners.

Introduction

The Westie is a Scotland Terrier family member closely associated with the Cairn Terrier. Hunters of foxes and badgers, this dog is known for its all white color, making them very visible out on the field. The Westie can stand an average of 10 inches and has an all white coat. This breed makes a great family pet and watchdog. Contact the dog breeders below for your next family friend.

Colors

The traditional color of the West Highland White Terrier is white, but some may be a wheat color or a white with darker colored paws. But in AKC shows the colors other than white will be disqualified, as that is the only acceptable standard color of the West Highland White Terrier.

Living Area

The West Highland White Terrier has the ability to live on a farm, in a city apartment, with a family of two, a grandmother, or a very overcrowded house with the whole extended family. The only thing it requires is a lot of human companionship, somebody to go for walks or throw balls, play with dog toys, and love. The Westie is not a fragile dog, rating medium on both the heat and cold tolerance scales. It is very high on the watchdog scale and ease of training, but nothing is as high as the affection level of this breed. The dog is a watchdog, and watches things continuously-letting its owner know what is going on. BUT the Westie is still friendly to strangers, expecting them to play ball or to pet them.
