An Owner's Welsh Terrier Description
Do you want to have some fun with your dog? Then get a Welsh Terrier! This little character is such a clown and carries out the sort of antics that have you laughing constantly. And ego...oh yes, they have theirs. Our Welsh, Hiccup, loves to get in every picture we take. She's not curious about the camera at all; she seems to know that it's what's in front of it that's important.
Hiccup likes to be the top dog in our house. She chooses to rule the roost most days. On those rare occasions when she is demoted to playing second banana, we reward her with her favorite toy and goodies for her being on her best behavior. She seems to finally be getting it thanks to positive reinforcement. Hope you're getting the important point: Welshes are strong-willed and high spirited. If you do ever get one of these terriers, daily exercise is important. If they don't get it, you'll be the one that regrets it. All that pent up energy needs a daily outlet.
Hiccup has many of the terrier traits, but like most dogs (no matter what breed), she has her own distinct quirks that set her apart. Just as one example, when she gets depressed, she begins to hiccup, and that's how she got her name from the breeder. We've tried numerous 'cures' but there seems to be only one thing that will make her hiccups go away: we grab our camera and begin snapping photos of her. I guess it either cheers her up to think that she is that important or it takes her mind off of what caused her depression in the first place. I'm not sure who's better trained, her or us!
Introduction
This breed originated in Wales around the 15th century. It was used to hunt small game and vermin. This strong-bodied breed stands an average of 15 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 20 lbs. Its hard, rough coat is mainly black or grizzle with some tan markings. This dog is excellent around children and makes a great companion for both young and old.
Colors
The Welsh Terrier's jacket is black, spreading up onto the neck, down onto the tail and into the upper thighs. Their legs, quarters, and head are clear tan, which is a deep reddish brown color. Some have grizzle jackets, as well. White is allowed only as small marks on the front of the breast.Living Area
Welsh Terriers don't tire easily. However, they are calm dogs that will do quite well in an apartment or with a small yard provided they are exercised regularly.Recognized By
