An Owner's Weimaraner Description
My dog is strong and powerful, fast and determined, high-strung and on top of everything else, he's a thief. Grey Ghost lives up to his nickname (Burglar) more often than not. He waits out of sight at our dinner time, obviously contemplating the best time to casually walk by and quickly snatch a piece of chicken or a dinner roll off your plate. Then, as innocent as can be he'll keep walking right out of the room, leaving you to wonder what happened to your food.
Aside from Burglar's dinner table manners, or lack thereof, he's a power-house hunter. He rarely tires; in fact, I have never been able to outlast him. Fact is, Burglar is kind enough to retreat back to my side when it becomes evident that I need a break. He'll practically 'glue' himself to my leg, as if to give me something to lean on.
As soon as he feels I've had enough rest time he's off again, sniffing out quail or pheasant, and I'd better get it in gear if I want to keep up. Even in the field, his thieving habits show up. One day a group of us were out hunting with our favorite four-legged partners; we were all doing fairly well, with the exception of Burglar. He was having a rough time locating and retrieving my birds.
I happened to be watching when he and a fellow bird dog were making their way back toward us; when the other dog laid his bird down to regrip it, Burglar snatched it away and brought it to me as if it were his. Once a thief, always a thief!
Introduction
The Weimaraner is a member of the Sporting group of dogs and is considered a pointer breed. The dog has often been nicknamed the “Gray Ghost” due to its distinguishing gray steel metallic colored coat. The coloring can range from a mouse gray to one that is more silver gray. The coat is short, dense and sheds very little. The Weimaraner is a dog of high energy and it needs considerable amounts of exercise. It makes a good running partner and does well in events such as agility, obedience, and tracking. This is definitely a companion dog for families that are active and enjoy being in the outdoors hiking or walking. They are very intelligent and are easy to train. The Weimaraner averages a height at the withers of 23 to 27 inches and weighs an average of 70 to 86 lbs. Though the breed can be exuberant around children they do very well with them and often are the most protective of the smaller members of the family. This is a loyal dog that loves companionship and is a beautiful, athletic, and intelligent member of the canine world.
