An Owner's Vizsla Description
I don't know why this dog reminds so many people of the Redbone Hound or the Weimaraner. Well, actually I do but the Vizsla is neither and my Vizsla is a breed all her own. I won't use this opportunity to champion this breed, but I will let you know about Katie, my own Vizsla.
She's a fun-loving and very active dog and she absolutely loves the water. I don't use her for hunting but love to watch her 'pretend' to be hunting. Truth be told, she probably doesn't think she is pretending at all and probably wonders why I'm not doing my job as a hunter. But when she is play 'hunting' she is very focused. Her muscles tense, and each step is deliberate and calculated. She may come upon a bird or small rodent in the bush but either way she has a blast flushing it out and giving it a good chase.
When she is not in the bird dog mode she is all about playing and having fun. As I mentioned earlier, she loves the water. She'll splash and even swim out to the ducks at the park pond, making them take flight to the other side in their terror. Although she is extremely obedient, we let her instincts take over and run their course as much as possible. When she is allowed to just be herself she is a much happier dog at the end of the day.
Katie really makes herself at home when the day is done, more than other dogs I've owned. What I mean by that is our home is hers. There's no dog house or pen that she gets stuck in, and no particular place she prefers. But when she's tired, she does show a preference for the couch, an old security blanket and a classic black and white detective movie to fall asleep with!
Introduction
Otherwise known as the Hungarian Pointer, this dog is believed to have been developed early this century in Hungary. Vizslas can measure an average of 22 inches at the shoulder and may weigh up to 65 lbs. Their short coat requires minimal grooming and comes in a rust shade. These dogs are best suited for those owners who live in rural areas so they can get lots of exercise.
Colors
Solid rust colors in any shading. Very pale yellow and very dark mahogany colors may be a fault in some registries. Black in the coat is a serious fault.Living Area
The Vizsla is a high-energy dog. It is, as a result, not a city animal. It does not function well cooped up in a small apartment dwelling. A home with a large, well fenced yard is best suited for its needs.Recognized By
