An Owner's Staffordshire Bull Terrier Description
Courage is a thing that can't be taught to a dog. That is something that comes from within the bloodlines, from deep within the dog's ancestry. And so it is with Cridhe, my Staffordshire Bull Terrier. As his Scottish name refers, he has heart.
I admire so much about him, and one of those special traits is non-aggressiveness. And how his commitment to non-agressive behavior does not diminish his courage one little bit. He'll stand up for the family even when his own safety is threatened by a larger foe. His intention is not to fight but to protect his adopted human family. His loving nature coupled with his courageous heart makes Cridhe the perfect family dog, in my opinion.
As a breed, the Staffordshire has taken some severe hits from the press and lawmakers in recent years, due to reports of aggression toward humans. I'm not writing this as an editorial on dangerous dogs so I will not use this space to try and clear up the misconceptions about this lovable and dedicated breed, no more than I would try and clear up the names of the Rottweiller or the Doberman Pinscher, other breeds that have been 'demonized' by the public at different times. I want to make clear that my dog's courage should not be mistaken for dangerous aggressiveness. In fact, it's his love and his gentle nature around my family that motivates him to put himself in harm's way if that is necessary for their well-being. I have never seen him behave in any way that would cause alarm. Never - not even once, no matter what the circumstances. All Cridhe asks is that the danger goes away. He won't even pursue it or chase it away, but he won't allow it to advance, either.
He's a smaller dog with a giant and courageous heart and I'll take that any day of the week.
Introduction
The Staffordshire originated in England where it was originally bred for tackling livestock. Since the outlawing of that sport, it has excelled from proper breeding by those who knew that the Staffordshire has many other good qualities. It stands an average of 15 inches at the shoulder. This breed comes in a variety of colors and is great with children and family.
Colors
Staffies come in a variety of different colors. Accepted colors are brindle, blue, black, red, fawn, and white; white markings are also acceptable with any color combination.Living Area
A small apartment would be ok if the dog is properly exercised daily. They don't tend to bark too much, so noise wouldn't be a factor.Recognized By
