An Owner's Shiloh Shepherd Description
Perfection can be so elusive... But the other hand, as dogs go, the Shiloh Shepherd may be the 'perfect' family pet. What does it take to qualify as the 'perfect' dog?

How about a dog that is still being refined to be intelligent, loyal, strong, lovable, protective, a hard worker, healthy, beautiful and graceful, great for either search and rescue or as a therapy dog?

These are just some of the attributes of Kinko, my Shiloh Shepherd. I have owned German Shepherds and they are great dogs, so I've been somewhat hesitant about changing breeds. But Shepherds had health and behavior issues that got us looking at alternatives, and the Shiloh doesn't seem to possess any such negative traits.

Kinko has been a part of our family for more than two years and is truly a wonderful dog. I know a lot has been written by other dog owners on this site, praising their particular dog for being the best breed to own. For me to recount all the characteristics and personality traits of Kinko would probably sound like just another biased owner experience. I guess if it were my mission to convince you that this is the 'perfect' dog, what I would say is go and spend just an hour with one of these Shiloh Shepherds and see if you can find any flaws.

See if they appear too anything -- too aggressive, too possessive, too unintelligent, too smelly, too sickly... well, you get the point. As you are crossing off all the negative traits you couldn't find, they will be winning your heart. You'll have to discover that on your own. Just a suggestion; if you don't want to lose your heart, don't get too close to one. They will steal it in an instant, just as Kinko did mine.

Introduction

A recognized rare breed, Shilohs have been bred to resemble German Shepherds of old -- many say they are like the dogs one remembers from childhood. A new breed, they originated in 1974 when New York breeder Tina Barber began crossing dogs to recreate the German shepherds she had as a girl. They are a great companion and excellent protectors. A strong body and sound temperament in both smooth and plush coat.

Colors

Comes in various colors. Shades of black with tan, golden tan, reddish tan, silver, and cream are as desirable as are various shades of richly pigmented golden, silver, red, dark brown, dark gray, or black sables. Also solid black or solid white is acceptable as long as the nose, eye rims, and lips are solid black.

Living Area

Will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised but do best with at least a large yard.

Recognized By
