Shikoku Description, Straight from the Dog's Mouth
For me, the call of the wild is strong. I hear it constantly in the wind that blows through the pines along the mountain slope behind my home. I live with an old man who escaped the confines of the city long ago and now finds comfort in solitude. He sits by the fire most evenings and I sit by his side.

Sometimes, he will speak about what is in his heart, while outside the wind blows words that I've heard before. They don't speak to the old man so I don't answer what is in my heart. The call of the wild is a strong thing and remaining here is very difficult. Yet the old man is alone and I sense that his life is short. I'll wait until spring and see if his eyes still dream or if I have been left alone by his passing.

If the fire has grown cold and there are no embers to ignite it again and if the old man is gone, as I think he might be, then I must follow my heart away from this place until I'm back to where I came from, back in the wild.

I know the wild will tell me that I have been spoiled, weakened by a ready-made meal on a tin plate. The wind will tell me to move on, to strengthen my legs and climb the mountain slope. On top of the mountain behind my home the wind blows and speaks of an old man that passed by just yesterday; I wish that he were here to meet me.
