An Owner's Sealyham Terrier Description
Surprises of surprises: a terrier that is a real couch potato! As a puppy no one could have guessed that Sean would grow up to be a dog that would rather lie around and watch TV than run and play with the kids. Maybe he met his match in my two boys during his puppyhood? Could they have played all of the terrier out of him?

Or maybe, Heaven forbid, he just got hooked on daytime soaps. Whatever the reason, the couch is where you'll find him. Seriously, when I first noticed that he'd begun just lying around, I thought he was sick and took him to the vet. She told me that there was nothing wrong with Sean and that this "maturing' is a common trait of this breed. Apparently, lots of terriers are full of piss and vinegar as pups, only to become very staid adult dogs who are happier on a couch. Now they tell me! It just goes to show that I should have done a lot more research in the first place. But we love him, and he's so affectionate we can't imagine life without him.

Our little couch potato. His favorite Show? You guessed it; "The Dog Whisperer". He'll raise his head when he sees or hears a dog that catches his interest on that series, and if one is really special he may even bark. Now don't get me wrong, he isn't on the couch all of the time. He likes taking trips in the car and gets excited over new toys. It's just that Sean is not the same active terrier he was when he was a baby.

Maybe it's just with the accelerated life span of a dog, he's reached middle age and is ready to relax? Or maybe he really does like those TV shows!

Introduction

The Sealyham Terrier originated in South Wales in 1850 and was bred to hunt badgers by Captain John Edwards. A small and compact dog, they are capable of guarding your estate or humble apartment, but gentle enough to entertain your grandchildren. White, often with spots on the head and face, they are friendly, lovable, delightful clowns, with their own sense of humor. Often called the couch potato of the terrier world, because they don't require as much exercise as most terriers, they are adventurous and make tireless companions. One major benefit for asthma sufferers is that the Sealyham Terrier is non-shedding.

Colors

The coat is all white, or may have lemon, tan, or badger markings on the head and ears. Coat may be more a yellowish-white than a pure white color.

Living Area

The Sealyham terrier is best suited as an indoor pet but it loves to be outside for play and exercise. The breed does not make a good kennel dog that is left caged. It should not be left in an unfenced yard or unchained as it will almost certainly run off or get into a fight with other animals should the opportunity present itself.Because of its size and temperament it makes a good pet for apartment dwellings. With early training it can be housebroken. It should be noted, however, that Sealys are powerful diggers and will happily dig under a fence to get out of the yard. They will also dig in gardens if the mood hits them. The Sealyham is well suited for apartment and condominium living, but is equally at home in the country setting. They are not by nature a barking dog, but they do have a surprisingly deep bark. They will bark when strangers approach, but they will also bark if other animals approach the home or yard.Care should be taken if they are brought into a home with small children. This breed will snap and growl if provoked, which children will do to any animal. They are also happy to chase any other pets that you may have in the home. If you have a cat, rabbit, or hamster as additional pets you may want to reconsider adding the Sealy to the home.
