An Owner's Schipperke Description
Black as coal, Skipper could get lost in the darkness of a summer night. He explored the outdoors with the enthusiasm of a hound and preferred the outside to being inside, without a doubt. Generally obedient, he had a mind of his own and chose to listen to it more often than to us.

Small and elusive, tough and determined, he would often find ways to escape the yard that protected him more than it restricted him. A family dog Skipper was; a thing he could not appreciate or understand. To be loved was nice, to be free was better. Temptation was irresistible, freedom most tempting of all.

Dark and moonless was that night's summer sky, a perfect time for a dog to run free. He dug a hole beneath the fence so he could slip out for awhile. I'm sure he intended to gallivant and then return before we were awake. He was invisible in the dark night and must have run across the street just as a car raced around the corner. There was one quick yelp, the squeal of brakes, and he was gone. We miss you, Skipper.

Introduction

High energy dogs that are very independent with a lot of personality. They are explorers, and should either have a fenced yard or be walked on a leash everyday. Schipperkes are always pure black. Most Schipperkes tails must be docked in such a way that there is no discernable tail. Their coat is thick and slightly rough to the touch, and very little bathing or brushing is needed to maintain it, although they do shed. Their history is somewhat unclear - some feel that they are a spitz type dog, while others claim they are related to the Belgian Shepherd. What is clear is that they date back more than 300 years in the history of Belgium.

Colors

The only acceptable color for Schipperkes is all black.

Living Area

Because of their size, Schipperkes are good dogs for apartments. Because of their origins, they also love boats and being on the water, making them the perfect companion for boat dwellers! Many fishermen choose these dogs as companions because the dogs love the water as much as their owners.
