An Owner's Saluki Description
Gazelle can run like the wind, and she'll outlast the wind itself. The endurance that she displays over long distances has become legendary. She is my Saluki, a sight hound by heritage. I'm almost sure that she would rather run than hunt, though the instinctive drive to do it is still there.
As she runs she is always looking; she will occasionally focus on something far off that will cause her to change direction. Graceful yet powerful, horseman can rarely keep up with a Saluki in full run. In the open flats of Colorado there's plenty of space to take Gazelle out and let her enjoy herself. Sometimes I will notice her canvassing the sky, looking for signs that prey may be close. She'll follow the glance of a hawk to see what he has spotted, what prey he is after.
If she picks up on his intention, then the race is on. he hawk may have an advantage with his birds-eye-view but don't assume he'll win just yet. More than once Gazelle has beaten him to the kill. The hawk will wait, though, because although she has beaten him before, she will relinquish the prize - the prey will still belong to him. She wanted to win the race, not the pack rat.
Gazelle is a sensitive one and she responds much more readily to a kind word than to a harsh one. She has taught me to use a softer tone when I speak, not only to her but to others. She has also showed me the importance of giving commendations, and encouraged me to let others run in the direction that their hearts may take them, knowing that they will always return feeling better afterward.
Introduction
This breed originated in the Mesopotamian region some 5000 years ago. The Saluki wasn't brought to Britain until the late 19th century, where it quickly gained popularity. Today, the breed has become well known throughout Europe. It measures an average of 26 inches at the shoulder and is very slender looking in appearance. This pet enjoys the wide open spaces of rural areas to roam.
Colors
White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan tricolor (black, tan and white), black and tan, or any of the previously mentioned colors and white.Living Area
The Saluki is not typically recommended for apartment living. Although the breed tends to be fairly well behaved indoors, they do need room to run outside. The Saluki is not happy unless it has the proper space to exercise its long legs. Saluki tend to prefer warmer climates, but can thrive almost anywhere. They do like soft, warm bedding at night. Most owners provide them with proper dog beds for this reason.Recognized By
