An Owner's Pyrenean mastiff Description
Everybody has their favorite dog. Some like little Terriers, others like the Hounds and Retrievers. And others like the intimidating looks of the Rottweiler and Doberman Pinchers. Who knows why we develop a favorite breed? I suppose to a large degree it depends on our needs, maybe our location and even our childhood. Working or companion dog? Apartment or rural lifestyle? Do we want the same dog we had a child?
Me, I have a Pyrenean Mastiff, a dog with a livestock watchdog heritage. I have no need for those skills - I have no livestock. I don't even need a guard dog - I have nothing noteworthy to guard here in my home. And I never had a dog like this dog when I was growing up. In fact, I never had a dog at all when I was a kid.
Why in the world would I want this giant Mastiff that sort of resembles a Saint Bernard? Well, truth be told, I didn't want him at all. I never wanted the responsibility of caring for any dog, much less a giant dog. Gopher belongs to a friend of mine who asked me to watch him until he got back from a quick trip down to South America. That was three years ago. I heard through a mutual friend that he's not coming back and that I am stuck with this giant dog.
Generally, the term 'stuck with' refers to something you don't want but can't get rid of, he was wrong describing it like that. Why in the world would I want to get rid of probably the most loyal friend I have ever had? Gopher and I have become the best of pals and if my dear friend from South American should return, he will be dog-less.
Introduction
The Pyrenean Mastiff is an ancient breed whose origins date back about 5000 years. These giant intelligent animals were used to guard flocks of sheep from predatory animals in mountainous regions, as well as to protect their home and family. Because of its enormous size, this agile dog needs plenty of room and lots of exercise. These dogs are brave, alert and responsive.
