An Owner's Nova Scotia Duck Description
More than once, my Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever pup has been mistaken for a Golden Retriever. There may be some shared blood in the breeding, but my dog is definitely a different breed - and quite a mouthful to boot!
I'm looking forward to utilizing both his natural hunting skills and those he acquires through training to create a wonderful hunting dog. But for now, I'm just enjoying his puppy awkwardness and funny character. I suppose every dog owner has their story to tell, and BoBo isn't old enough to have amassed adventures upon misadventures yet, but I reckon they'll come soon enough.
Of course, there's always that period when you wonder if the puppy you've chosen has sufficient smarts to make it to adulthood. Most do, in spite of themselves. I'm wondering that way with Bo. He's gotten his head stuck in a bucket, glued his eyes together eating honey, played too rough with the cat, got too close to a skunk and chased his tail until he knocked himself out by running squarely into the tree.
I tell myself that this stage is temporary; he'll grow up and mature some, just give him time. Already, there's the fact that he's showing some interest in the water fowl hereabouts, which is very promising. And hunting waterfowl is what Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are famous for. I'm especially excited since up until now his only interest in birds has been sitting under the pigeons' roost and wondering about the occasional droppings that land on his head. I was beginning to worry about that!
Introduction
This breed originated in Nova Scotia where it was known as the Little River Duck Dog. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a dog that loves to hunt waterfowl and is famous for its hunting techniques. Its medium length coat is red or a fiery orange. They can measure an average of 19 inches at the shoulders and weigh up to 45 lbs. These Retrievers requires above average grooming.
Colors
shades of red and orange uniform over the body. White markings on the feet, face, chest and the tip of the tail are acceptable.Living Area
Thanks to their intelligence, this breed is highly adaptable to all conditions. Whether living in a small apartment or house, a Toller will need ready access to the outdoors. In a home with a yard, they are likely to be happy spending half their time indoors and half their time out. The opportunity to go out and explore the yard at will can also help keep the Toller from becoming bored.Recognized By
