An Owner's Norrbottenspets Description
Frida is energy in motion: she rarely sits still or lies around for very long. And I'm told that's a pretty good definition of Norrbottenspets, or Nordic Spitz. It's because of her constant need for activity that I'm as fit as I am. Living here in the high country Frida's got plenty of room to do what she loves most: hunt.
She lives to hunt waterfowl, but will actually hunt just about anything when a scent blows across her nose. We're talking even big game like bear, elk and even the occasional big cat that passes through. She's chased a deer until it leapt across a chasm and she dropped from exhaustion.
All of this attests to the fact that she rarely gets distracted and never gives it up once she is engaged in tracking game. So even once that deer was out sight, she picked herself up, found the spoor and pursued it again.
It's for that reason I almost always accompany her. She really doesn't know when to call it quits, unless she hears my command to settle. But occasionally I let her have the freedom to follow her urges.
More than once, though, I have had to set out and find her because she gets so caught up hunting whatever it is that she loses all track of time or distance. I'm sure she could find her way back, but I worry about her. We have black bears and cougars here in Washington State, and both put up quite a fight if backed into a corner. When I do find her I have to be quite firm to get her to give it up and come back home. It's like trying to get kids to stop playing and come in because it's getting dark. They're having too much fun to stop. That's my Nordic Spitz: a hardy kid having tons of fun.
