An Owner's Newfoundland Description
Lots of other large dogs are referred to as being 'gentle giants' but none can carry that title to the same degree as a Newfoundland. Most dog experts agree that this breed is by far the gentlest of all. And since I've owned Baxter since he was a puppy, I can attest to that fact. Baxter has a sweeter disposition than any other dog I've ever owned or known.
He's a natural caregiver and wonderful baby sitter; his concern for the safety of our kids has been demonstrated repeatedly. When they are all swimming in the pool, Baxter constantly paces up and down the perimeter with a watchful eye. I was aware that Newfs like the water and that they are even used in water rescues, but I didn't realize how natural this ability was.
Without any kind of training, more than once Baxter has jumped into the pool to rush to a kid who appears to be in distress. His size and strength makes him a sturdy lifeboat for them to grab onto. I can't tell you how much having him near when they are in the pool sets my mind at ease. Of course, we don't solely rely on him to watch the kids, but his nurturing sense makes him pretty special. If he weren't a fantastic family dog I'd definitely consider making him some sort of 'rescue' dog because of his remarkable natural abilities.
With such a faithful and caring dog, it goes without saying how the kids feel about him; he is their best friend and favorite playmate. Actually, he is more than that. I think they see Baxter as their personal guardian. When they ask if they can go somewhere or do something that I'm not sure of, they will preface the request with, "We'll take Baxter with us". They know nothing bad can happen to them if he's around.
Introduction
These dogs are intelligent, courageous and generous with outstanding temperaments. They are loving, patient and playful with children and are born babysitters. Any animal, child or visitor can expect a friendly welcome from the Newfie. They require moderate exercise and should be given opportunities to swim and frolic. Their thick, coarse, double coat requires weekly brushing with a hard brush. Bath only when absolutely necessary as it will strip away the natural oils in the coat. These dogs weigh 100 to 150 lbs. and stand 25 to 29" at the shoulders. Contact the dog breeders below for your next family friend.
