An Owner's Neapolitan Mastiff Description
Napoleon has finally reached the ripe old age of 15 and he just doesn't have the get-up-and-go that he once did. He's a Neapolitan Mastiff, and he still contributes to the joy of this family each and every day. His presence is felt even when he's just lying at our feet.
He often reminds me that I've aged too; all too often lately I find myself thinking that the mind is willing but the flesh is weak. We're both prime examples of that old adage these days! Napoleon and I watch the grandkids from the sidelines, cheering them on rather than jumping into the fray.
I know his best days are past, and I believe he knows that with my arthritis, mine are gone as well. We sit together happily and quietly, while the kids and their younger dogs chase the Frisbee. We smile at each other, and I'm sure he's remembering all our wonderful years together running and playing just as poignantly as I do.
Napoleon continues to be loved by the grandkids, since that doesn't require anything more than cooperation. They sit beside him and give him big hugs as I tell the stories of his escapades when he was young. They all have the same ending: that as big as Napoleon is, he heart is even bigger.
Introduction
These dogs are descended from the Tibetan Mastiff, the most ancient member of the canine species. Neapolitans are affectionate, loyal, protective and fearless. They are extremely intelligent. They are good with family and very loving towards children. Neapolitans have a loose, rolling, cat-like gait. They like walks. Their short haired coat is easy to groom. These dogs weigh up to 165 lbs. and stand 26 to 30" at the shoulders.
Colors
gray, blue, black, mahogany and tawny (any lighter and darker shades of these colors are allowed.Living Area
This is a dog that does well indoor if the home is dog proofed and saliva proofed. Neos can live outdoors even in the winter time if there is access to a good doghouse with a lot of bedding. However, summertime can present some breathing issues especially since the Neo has a short muzzle. Owners must ensure shade and access to fresh water. Yet if the weather becomes extreme, the Neo should be moved indoor especially in humid and low air quality days.Recognized By
