An Owner's Native American Indian Dog Description
Ahh...a dream dog. That's what I thought when I first saw a Native American Indian Dog (NAID). I was hunting high up in the mountains of northern Arizona. I think we may have been near an American Indian Reservation. We'd get a quick glimpse, but, every time we tried to get a good look at this dog, off it ran. I have seen wolves and coyotes, so I knew right off that it was a dog that looked like a wolf-- and it looked just beautiful.

Tadita is an Omaha Indian name meaning "one who runs." So when we finally got our dream dog I decided I would call her by that name--Tadita. Not that she would run away. The NAID are pretty loyal to family and she stays as close to us as possible. When we have to take off for any reason, she patiently waits for us to return. Yesterday we caught her laying on the bed sleeping with the cats.

Becky and I have always been pet people and before we got Tadita, we learned that one of our sons is allergic to dogs, while our oldest daughter has asthma. We thought that might mean we'd have to stick to only fish tanks, but guess what? Our dream dog is hypoallergenic, and believe it or not, Tadita only sheds once a year. That's one great, big reason why we chose a dog of this breed.

Our experience has been that Tadita likes to be outside when it is cold, and in the shade or in water when it is hot. Tadita barks very little and trained easily. She is a winner with our family, friends, and neighbors.

Introduction

This dog's intelligence level is extremely high. They are exceptionally trainable and eager to please their human companions. They are loyal and protective of their families and are totally dedicated to their human owners. Native American Indian dogs are very good with children and other animals, including other dogs, household pets and livestock. Their coat is hypoallergenic. They have no "doggy" smell and those who suffer from pet allergies can usually own these animals. The inner hair coat sheds only once a year. The average life span is between 14 to 19 years of age. Colors

Dan range in color from silver to black from the tortoise shell color.

Living Area

Does not do well as an apartment dog or a total housedog. They need a fenced in area where they can run and play at will and do not adapt well to a crate training method.

Recognized By

NAID, NKC, DRA
