Introduction
These dogs of Turkey are a breed renowned for their bravery and for their devotion to their owners. With their distinctive black masked fawn coloring, mastiff-like physique and gentle disposition, these rare dogs are beginning to get greater public attention. The UKC recognized Turkish Kangal Dogs in 1998. Because of their ability to bond strongly they make great family dogs. Intelligent and loyal, they are good with children when raised with them from puppyhood. Grooming twice a week keeps their coat looking healthy. These dogs weigh 90 to 145 lbs. and stand 28 to 32" at the shoulders.
History
The Kangal has been guarding Anatolian flocks for centuries. They are named for the Kangal region of eastern Turkey where they evolved. Today, the Turkish government is breeding these increasingly rare dogs in their homeland. While they may be on the decline there, Kangals are becoming the dog of choice in regions where livestock herding is expanding, particularly in places like Namibia, where they fierce devotion to guarding the flocks they protect has made them the chief protection against cheetahs.
General Description
Kangals are all fawn colored with sable guard hairs, black shaded ears and a black mask on their face. They are large animals with a dense double that protects them from climate conditions and from the attacks of predators. They do not herd sheep; what they do is guard them from predators.
Temperament
These guardians happily become devoted family pets. The family members become the 'flock' they guard as a member of the household. They get along wonderfully with children and other pets.
Health and Care
Kangals have dense double coats, evolved to keep them warm and dry no matter what the weather. This will ‘blow’ twice a year or more, depending on climate. In between those seasonal sheddings, brush your Kangal to remove debris and any loose hair. Bathe only when necessary. Keep nails trim and acclimate your dog to regular dental hygiene so that teeth brushing becomes a normal routine.
