History
The Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Standard
Poodle. Originating in North American, the Goldendoodle was basically
developed for people who suffer from allergies to fur and dander. However,
all Goldendoodles do not display the low shedding quality of the Standard
Poodle.
Despite that, like other designer breeds the Goldendoodle too has seen a
spate in popularity due to his desirable traits.
General Description
The Goldendoodle is average in size with an average shoulder height of 20 to
25 inches but much depends on the size of his parents. Miniature or Toy
Poodle mixes tend to be smaller.
Being a crossbreed, the Goldendoodle tends to exhibit a wide variety of
appearances. Thinner coat and a shorter muzzle is seen those having more
Poodle influence while a wider neck and a long muzzle is observed in those
with more influence of the Golden Retriever.
The coat of Goldendoodles may be shaggy and wavy or shaggy /wavy with loose
curls. He does not have the curly coat like the Standard Poodle or the flat
coat of the Golden Retriever. He will also go through 10 to 15 coat changes
from birth to the time he is one year old. He has a single coat and sheds
very lightly. Once the coat is fully formed it requires little of no
maintenance.
His coat is long and thick and has dropping ears that may be long or short.
As an adult he has full facial beard.
Temperament
Being a hybrid breed, the Goldendoodle exhibits differing temperament. If
the parents are from quality breeding stock he has an even personality and
disposition. He is very intelligent and friendly, even with strangers and
other pets. Goldendoodles are not known for biting. However, there is a
possibility of behavioral issues arising when left alone for longer periods
or due to lack of companionship.
Basically, the Goldendoodle is a lovable creature, well-mannered and highly
intelligent and lends to training very easily. He has a charm of his own. He
is also loyal and confident and a family oriented dog like the Golden
Retriever provided he is above 25 pounds. As far as temperament is concerned
smaller Goldendoodles tend to exhibit traits of the Toy Poodle. He is not a
hunting dog but enjoys being outdoors and indulges in sports and activities.
The Goldendoodle requires minimal grooming and like one of his parents, the
Poodle, sheds very less hair. This makes him a good choice for families with
mild allergies.
The Goldendoodle has no significant health issues apart from those commonly
present in his parents. Both Poodles and Golden retrievers are prone to hip
dysplasia, which is likely to pass on to Goldendoodles.
Generally, the Goldendoodle lives healthily for up to 14 years or more. It
goes without saying that owners have to take care that he is provided with
adequate nutrition and taken to a veterinarian for regular checkups. Pets4You offers listings of
