History
The English Springer Spaniel happens to be the initial hunting breed among the Spaniels. During the Renaissance period, these dogs were considered the suitable hunting companions of the Europeans. It was not until 1700 that they become popular in America. The name Springer came from its act of flushing wild prey by springing forward.
General Description
The English Springer Spaniel is a hearty, medium size compact dog. The dog has a docked tail and its coat is relatively long with additional feathering on the legs, chest, ears, brisket, and chest. Its pendulous ears are soft and dangle to the sides and its face reveals a very gentle expression. A constantly wagging tail, as well as a sturdy frame, makes this breed unmistakably part of the spaniel family. The legs are muscular, well proportioned, and balanced with the rest of the body which gives agility and endurance. This breed exemplifies a good combination of utility and beauty.
Temperament
The average Springer happens to be friendly and keen on pleasing people. They are fast learners and respond well to instructions and any form of training. Their affectionate nature makes them favorable family dogs. Springers have great attentiveness and alertness that make them good hunting companions. Energy level for these dogs is moderate but activity to vent its inherent energies are mandatory. They are good with other pets that may occupy the same household. These dogs are extremely playful and will tend to play with things lying around the house.
Health and Care
The two ailments that pose a great risk to this breed are progressive Retinal atrophy PRA and Hip Dysplasia. Scientists are currently doing genetic marking to be able to establish the carriers of these diseases. They could also be affected by ear infections, therefore, thorough cleaning of ear canals needs to be done on a weekly basis using a suitable solution. Regular exercise will keep English Springer Spaniels in good physical condition and will also boost their mental capacities.
Other Information
The English Springer Spaniel is a good retriever and is able to retrieve game to the hand of a hunter with a soft mouth: the dog will not puncture or damage the game in any way. Their coats are not difficult to maintain, but do require regular brushing. Baths with shampooing should be done only when necessary. Springers tend to do well when they are they have a set of rules that are imposed by an authoritative pack leader. When they have un-authoritative masters, they will often do as they please and trouble the owner. The dogs enjoy water and muddy areas. The two types of English Springer Spaniel are field Springers and bench Springers. Field Springer Spaniel varieties are reared mainly for hunting purposes, while Bench Springers, which are more energetic, are normally reared for field work and have a whiter coat with less hair. The dogs should always walk behind or beside the owner and never in front. This breed has a good pedigree and can fit well in a family setting.
