History of the Dachshund

Although the name “dachshund,” which means “badger dog,” was not used until the early 17th century, the dog can trace its ancestry back to the 15th century in Western Europe. It has even been theorized that the Dachshund is related to the Tekel Dog pictured on Egyptian tombs. Illustrations of the dog are found in historic manuscripts from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. These most often picture the dogs hunting badgers and show their elongated bodies, short legs and hound-like ears. The dachshund was bred specifically for the purpose of hunting badgers. The “badger dog” was bred with the ability to dig into the badger’s tunnel and fight the animal to the death. Two different types of dachshunds emerged over time. One was larger (30-35 pounds) and used to hunt wild boar in addition to badgers, while a smaller variety (16-22 [pounds) was used to hunt foxes and hare. The dogs were imported to the United States in the mid 1800s and were popular until World War I, when they fell out of favor because of their connection with Germany.

General Description

The dachshund may have one of three types of coat: smooth, wire-haired, or long-haired. It also comes in two sizes: standard and miniature. The dachshund has short legs and the signature elongated body, for which they are sometimes called “weiner dogs.”

Temperament

The dachshund is a playful dog and loves to chase things. They are determined and ferocious if given the change. Dachshunds can also be stubborn, which means they are not especially easy to train, but they are devoted and loyal companions. Dachshunds are very intelligent and make good watchdogs because of their loud bark. These are very courageous, confident dogs, and they are well suited to city living.

Health and Care

The Dachshund’s elongated body presents a tendency toward spinal injury and disease. It is a sturdy dog, but they must be handled carefully and be watched so that they do not become obese or allowed to jump from significant heights. The smooth-coated variety is easy to care for, needing only an occasional brushing. The long-haired or wire-coated dog requires a brushing several times per week and the occasional trimming. The dog’s ears need special attention and should be cleaned regularly to avoid mites or fungal/bacterial growth. Taking the dachshund for a walk on a leash or playing with the dog indoors provides adequate exercise. Because they are willing to play indoors and do not need a yard for exercise, they are excellent companions for apartment dwellers.

Interesting Facts

The dachshund is the only breed recognized by the American Kennel Club that hunts both above and below ground. Dachshunds have been companions to royalty all over Europe. Queen Victoria of England was especially found of dachshunds.
