History

Cocker spaniels were popular dogs in the 1950s. They have vivacious personalities and are devoted to their families but there was shedding and dander to consider. Poodles, also popular at the time, practically don't shed at all, and because of their kinked fur, they drop very little dander in their homes. Somewhere in that decade, whether by design or accident, a Poodle and a Cocker Spaniel mated and the resulting litter had the best traits of both - and were cute as a button to boot!

In the decades since then, this combination mixed breed has become an extremely popular family. They are active without being hyper, eager to please and quick to learn.

General Description

Because of the differences in poodle sizes, there are all sorts of differences in Cockapoo sizes and weights. Fur varies from dog to dog as well, depending on which trait a particular pup inherits from a particular parent.

Thanks to their mixed heritage, Cockapoos are available in every color and pattern. Ears are usually wide set and flop down on either side of the face. Eye color tends to be dark, but lips, lids and eyes may be lighter on liver-colored and merle dogs.

Temperament

The outgoing character of Cockapoos has made them a family favorite in numerous countries. In each place the dog has come to be known under another name - but whether it's a Spoodle or a PooCock, these dogs are natural clowns, active and curious, happy to play any game and happier still to be petted and adored by every family member. Both sides of their family tree are dogs very much at home in the water. As a result most Cockapoos enjoy swimming too.

Health and Care

Because the fur can vary so widely, generalizations aren't much help here. If you are seeking allergy relief for someone in your home, work with a breeder that allows you to try different dogs with your allergy sufferer. In any little, there may be Cockapoos with curly poodle fur, or straight and shiny cocker spaniel fur. While both will need some grooming, you may find one or the other preferable. All dogs with hanging ears should be checked frequently as dirt and debris can be a problem and can lead to ear infections.

Colors

Black, Tan, beige, or buff, Red, including auburn and apricot colors, Brown, varying from light to dark and tan, Sable, a brown color with tipping and shading in black, Crea, White, Silver, Mixtures of more than one color

Living Area

When left alone for extended periods of time, Cockapoos are generally not destructive, though can become anxious so crating is recommend if leaving a Cockapoo alone for more than four hors at a time.
