Chart Polski Description, Straight from the Dog's Mouth
Want to race? Come on! Wanna? Huh? I'm only a descendant of the Asiatic greyhound, but I'm as fast a runner as you'll see in these parts. Come on, you wanna? Want to play chase? I love to chase things. How about a rabbit chase? Rabbits are fun to chase 'cause they dart back and forth - they're a real challenge. I bet I can guess which way they are going next and get there first!

Now foxes can be fun to chase. They don't seem to tire as easily as some of the other animals that come over to play. And I don't tire very easily myself, so it makes for a good afternoon playing 'Outfox the Fox', a game I invented where I get to chase a fox - any fox - all day long. I do have a serious side, especially when it comes to looking after my family. I just want to make sure strangers are on the up-and-up and that they mean no harm to me and mine.

Sometimes I think people have a tendency to think that I'm a wimp, it's this sleek look I've got going for me. Well, let me tell you this: don't test my courage to see how far I would go in defending what is mine or think I'm a goner if another animal backs me into a corner.

It may be true that I don't have the best social skills; I should have taken a few etiquette lessons while I was a pup. But I'm a quick learner - you really can teach an older dog new tricks if you're patient - and if you want me to be nice to someone, then I reckon I can be.

Want to play? I'll race you to the house!

Introduction

The Chart Polski is descended from the Asiatic greyhound. A good-tempered dog, the breed is loyal and normally reserved. It is protective and displays great courage under fire. During a chase, besides being extremely fast thanks to its greyhound ancestry, the Chart Polski is also a very skillful and persistent hunter, reacting quickly and confidently. This breed requires firm and fair human leadership, and must never be treated harshly. Males are 28-32" (70-80cm) and females are 27" to 30" (68-75cm) Any color is allowed and none preferred (red, black, blue, white, black/tan, blue/tan, tri-color, brindle, light sand to red-fawn, sable, parti-color).

History

The Chart Polski is a sighthound descended from the Asian Saluki (also known as the Asian sighthound). They have the piercing gaze that can scan a horizon and see the slightest movement from a great distance - and take off in a flash. In manuscripts dating from the early medieval era, the dog is already known as the native sighthound of Poland. Packs of these dogs were kept by landowners, who found them tremendously valuable for hunting. Had time stood still, the breed would have continued, no doubt, to dominate the hunt until the development of long distance sights for modern weapons.

But politics changes everything and in Poland, the Chart Polski was nearly wiped out by the Communist purges of all things associated with the former ruling class. This genocide continued for decades. It was not until the 1970s that dog lovers and nationalists united to preserve, protect and breed the last of these native animals, some of which still existed, both in Poland and in formerly Polish lands belonging to the USSR at that time. The effort took nearly a decade, but finally succeeded and in 1981 a new stud book for the breed opened with 30 dogs listed.

Today, these beautiful animals are a tribute to those stalwart individuals who would not let them vanish. Today the breed is recognized by the Polish Kennel Club and byt the FCI (the premier international kennel organization based in Europe) as well as by the UKC in Britain.

General Description

There are characteristics all sightounds share; however, the Hart Polski stands apart. The dog is noticeably larger and more muscular than many other sighthounds. . Muzzle is strongest in front of the eyes and from there it tapers somewhat towards the tip; these dogs do not have a pointed snout like many sighthounds. Eyes are large and almond-shaped; their color can range from dark brown to amber depending on coat color. Expression is part of the standard: the Chart Polski's gaze should look both lively and intense. Scissors bite with tight lips. The dog comes in all colors; lips, eye rims and nose should be consistent with coat color.

Temperament

Fast and courageous as a hunting dog, reserved yet loyal as a family pet. That unique combination is part of what led people to fight to save this breed. The dogs can quite literally wither from a lack of exercise; best home likely to be one where the dog has free access to a well-fenced outdoors.

Health and Care

Regular exercise being the necessity it is for these dogs, provide that along with your love and affection and your Chart Polski will thrive.
