Introduction

Although they take their name from the northern Italian city of Bologna, it is possible that the Bolognese are descended from the Bichons of southern Italy. These dogs closely resemble the Maltese. They are usually white in color, with some blonde markings. Rare today, even in Italy, these affectionate dogs are slightly more reserved and shy than their Bichon Frise cousins. They enjoy the companionship of people and form a close relationship with their owners, and they get along well with other dogs. They weigh 5 to 9 lbs. and stand 10-12" at the shoulders.

History

Easily confused with the Maltese, the Bichon Frise and the Havanese. And no wonder: they are all related early on. Their remarkable white fur and nearly telepathic connection to the human it bonds closest with made the Bolognese a popular companion of the royal and mighty in the Middle Ages, and that continued through the Renaissance. "These two little dogs are the most royal gifts one can make to an emperor," wrote

General Description

Wooly white fur and expressive dark eyes and nose give the Bolognese an animated face that's hard to forget - if you manage to see it through all that white curly fur!

These are square little dogs (literally - the body length is equal to their withers' height). Even their head appears square, though it's actually egg-shaped. Black nose, black eyelid rims; eyes dark ochre. Scissor bite, even jaws in an almost square muzzle. Fluffy white hair looks like loose ringlets, and they are always pure white.

Temperament

The Bolognese is not the dog to stay home alone all day while the family is at work or school. These animals need far more daily companionship than that lifestyle provides. They are also 'one man' dogs, meaning there will be one human in the family that the dog will follow and stay next to above all others.

Known for its problem solving skills, the Bolognese is an expert interpreter of the moods and attitudes of the people it loves. It reads body language, listens to tone of voice and seems to understand exactly what is going on.

Health and Care

Despite the somewhat long coat, these dogs do not shed very much at all but they do require regular brushing to remove loose hair, dander and dirt. Owners who don't have the time or inclination for that can instead opt for a short hair cut, which the dogs seem not to mind.

Colors

solid white, and may have small spots of champagne, particularly around the face

Living Area

Has a moderate level of activity, but he doesn't dislike long walks. He needs socialization and training.
