An Owner's Berger Des Pyrenees Description
Here is an energetic dog that really enjoys the companionship of people. This breed can be a very good match for older retired folks, or for those that are homebound. But they do require exercise, so if daily walks aren't possible for the owner, arrangements will need to be made to ensure the dog's well-being.

My dog, Shag, does okay with our kids but he has no tolerance for abuse, even if it's unintentional. So I wouldn't suggest a BDP with toddlers who might not yet understand what not to do with a dog. Legos up the nose are simply not tolerable for this breed, make no mistake about it. As for training requirements, I bet I've spent just as much time training Shag as I have my kids. But unlike my kids, Shag really enjoys being given a job to do and he'll do it instantly and perfectly, whether practicing his obedience training routines, helping me with herding the sheep, or just keeping an eye on the family. My sense is that this dog really loves to be valued. Praise Shag and he's just delighted.

This breed does very well as a rescuer and is often used as such. Funny thing, Shag will often search for lost items lost around the house. He'll come find us with his discoveries - keys, watches, backpacks - gently cradled in his mouth. Even if they weren't misplaced, he thinks they were and we get a kick out of that behavior. Sometimes I think he takes things just so he can get credit for finding them -- it's that 'loves to be valued' behavior again. He always gets a good pat on the head for his 'search and finds'.

As a breed, they are so vivacious and quick-witted that you begin to think that they can perform just about any feat. This is the kind of dog you would want with you if you got into serious trouble and the dog had to go find help, like Lassie used to do on TV.

Bred to be a sheepdog means living on our ranch is perfect for Shag. He's a natural herder and loves the outdoors. Shag seems to be more attached to Dad - he will follow him around constantly, waiting for any command. So in that sense he's a one owner dog. Dad's getting on in years, and I trust that Shag will take care of Dad no matter what.

Introduction

A long haired Pyrenean Sheepdog or Shepherd, these dogs are lean and lively with a minimal height and weight and a sinewy build. There are two varieties, rough faced and smooth faced. These dogs have a great deal of energy and intelligence and a cunning, mischievous attitude and expression. They are alert, suspicious and ready for action. These dogs are very affectionate with their immediate family but are distrustful of strangers Berger Des Pyrenees require moderate grooming and considerable exercise. They weigh 15 to 30 lbs and stand 15-19" at the shoulders.

History

Legend says the Pyrenean Shepherds were present with the first men in the region. While that may not be true, it's certainly safe to say the breed has been part of life in the High Pyrenees for as long as anyone can remember, and these dogs are still working in the region today, herding sheep just as their ancestors did.

In more modern times, Pyreneans received awards and praise for their work during WWI, where many hundreds of these dogs served as couriers and watch dogs, and aided search and rescue efforts.

General Description

Pyreneans come in different coat types. The larger specimens are the smooth faced. As the name suggests, these have smooth short facial hair; the body is double coated and there are longer tufts on the underside of the tail and the backs of the legs. Longer coats present either demi long or rough faced.

Demi longs have medium length facial hair with a long flat body coat. Rough faced have long hair all over. Pups of both varieties occur in the same litter.

Colors are black; fawn with or without a black mask; brindles; gray and merles. Some white at the head is not a disqualifier in the show ring. Black almond shaped eyes in all but the merles, which can have blue or partial blue eyes. Rims are always black.

Natural ears and tails are becoming more common for these dogs, which have traditionally been docked and cropped.

The head of the Pyr is triangular; the AKC standard notes 'the vibrant expression'. Shaggy in appearance, these are lightweight dogs that move remarkably fast with a preternatural agility.

Overall, these dogs are lean and rectangular. Medium chests descend only to the elbow, neck is long and arched into the shoulders.

Temperament

Lightweight and fleet-footed, these small sheepdogs excel at managing livestock. Unlike other working dogs, Pyreneans do any field task, not just a specific one. Rounding up strays or moving a herd, despite their size they get the job done. Intelligent and active, they make fine family pets if they get enough exercise and need significant outlets for their energy and intellect. Many people enjoy Frisbee, Flyball and other competitive sport and obedience activities with their Pyrenean.

They bond to one individual in the family as a rule, and will follow that human when possible. Keenly observant, they are natural problem solvers.

Health and Care

With a waterproof coat (no matter which length) the Pyr needs little more than a weekly brushing to remove loose fur and dirt. Keep nails trimmed and brush teeth regularly for optimal health.

Colors

fawn to gray with minimal white acceptable, black and other colors uncommon

Living Area

The Pyre can survive in any amount of space given to them. It is the amount of mental and physical stimulation that really makes a difference.
