An Owner's Belgian Laekenois Description
I've heard people say that this breed has an attitude, notably that they remain a bit 'haughty' around other pets, particularly with non-dogs that are smaller than the Malinois. But we did a lot of other research, and decided on the breed because they have so many of the characteristics we wanted. Our breeder assured us that if we slowly introduced other animals in a quiet and controlled setting, there'd be no problem. And it's worked out just that way, so Troy fits in with all the furry creatures our kids befriend. As for people, Troy is quite affectionate with family members once he accepts them - and it is that 'once he accepts them' quality that makes him generally reserved toward strangers at first meeting.
Troy was an excellent choice for my family. He's protective but not aggressive. And he is definitely self confident, so he will step up to the plate when needed. We made a commitment when Troy was a pup to spend a lot of time developing his social skills. We introduced him to as many different animals and people as we could. That really paid off.
Troy has such a dynamic personality. He is alert, attentive to his surroundings and to the immediate needs of the family. We put him through obedience training early and he displayed his intelligence by placing at the top of his class. Troy is so trustworthy and dependable. He never seems to get moody at all, and that's what I like about him. He's also a very active dog, so we spend a lot of time providing him with activities that stimulate him mentally and physically. Troy exhibits his herding desires occasionally, and it's really fun to watch. He'll begin running zig zag about the yard, as though he's pretending to be working.
Troy enjoys being in the house but needs ready access to the outdoors, so we put in a doggie-door to give him his independence. It's his strong, confident nature, along with his affectionate nature that makes Troy such a great addition to our family.
