An Owner's Bedlington Terrier Description
Mary, Mary, sometimes contrary, how does your garden grow? This lamb-look-a-like is not a lamb at all. Not a wolf in sheep's clothing, either. This is Mary, my Bedlington Terrier. She displays many of the terrier personality traits and a few of her own. Like most terriers, Mary is inquisitive, intelligent, alert and aggressive when it comes to small outdoor animals. Much of her aggressiveness comes from the fact that her ancestors were bred to hunt and rid farms of vermin.
Mary doesn't hunt and she doesn't live on a farm, but her inquisitive nature keeps her alert and she's always checking things out. It's almost as though Mary is looking for something and is determined to find where it's hiding. She can be quite entertaining, and since she loves to be the center of attention, she'll act clownish just to get a laugh.
Although Mary welcomes a new crowd to play to, there are times she just doesn't care for someone's demeanor and will let you know she doesn't think much of that person. It's this trait that actually makes her a pretty nice watchdog, although we don't think of her as such. She just has a good sense about people.
Mary, like most Bedlingtons, has a moderate to high energy level and although she needs to have a daily exercise routine, she doesn't need to be overworked. She enjoys going for hikes with us and truly likes a good game of fetch. Just as important as her physical requirements is her need for mental stimulation.
I've noticed that after a good hike or walk, Mary likes to just hit the couch for a few hours and chill. Gives me a chance to catch up on things I need to get done without engaging her. But once the nap is over, she expects me to be ready for more activities, or at least, to be ready to watch her play the clown.

Bedlington Terriers do better in apartments than they do in wide open areas.
