Introduction
The Azawakh is a particularly leggy and elegant sight hound. These dogs are exceptionally fast and reach speeds up to 37 mph. They are hunters, protectors and companions. Remaining instinctively reserved with strangers, they are gentle with those they love. The coat is short and fine. Coat colors are fawn in all shades from sable to dark with flecking limited to the extremities. Azawakhs weigh 37 to 55 lbs. and stand 23-29" at the shoulders.
History
Azawakhs have been bred by the nomadic tribes of Saharan and sub-Saharan Africa for centuries. They are sight hounds, but actually work as pack hunters, which is unusual for such dogs. Chasing prey, they have been clocked at running speeds up to 40 miles per hour. They have been used as guard dogs in these regions as well, and there too they work as a pack to run off intruders.
Recent genetic research has confirmed the unique history of this ancient breed. They have few relatives in the sight hound family: their lineage shows a stronger heritage from wolves, jackals and the original dogs of the sub-Saharan region. The geographic conditions of this unique corner of the world create isolation for all within its boundaries and the Azawakh has developed without contact from other dogs over the centuries.
While still more common in their native land than anywhere else, their popularity is growing as more individuals seek these unique dogs as part of a reconnection with the primitive past.
Description
These dogs are tall, thin and narrow. At their ideal weight, their bones show clearly. Colors include black, blue fawn, blue and red and in Africa, these colors may include varying degrees of white markings.
Everything about these dogs shows their ability to run over long distances in a harsh climate. They have a double suspension gallop, and it is the flexing of their back from flat to arched during this gallop that accounts for their speed.
Temperament
Like all pack animals, they are happiest when in the company of their own kind. They appear to have complex social structures within their packs. They are loving to their human families and reserved among strangers. As a breed, they are suspicious of the unknown and slow to warm up and accept new things or people. They are non aggressive but protective, which is why they have been guard dogs for centuries.
While generally impervious to climate at the high end - they can run even on the hottest days - they do not do well in wet or cold regions. They will dig dens if they have the opportunity, no matter what their living conditions are like.
Health and Care
These dogs need only your love and affection to thrive. They have extremely short fur and barely shed. Be sure your Azawakh gets daily exercise, and as with any dog, regularly trim toenails and brush teeth for optimum long term health.
