An Owner's Australian Terrier Description
There's no such thing as a calm and reserved Aussie Terrier. At least, that's my experience. Spunky is the most recent evidence of that. He displays a full-on natural aggressiveness to both strangers and other dogs. As is the case with most terriers, Spunky has never looked into a mirror. Otherwise, he would know he's just not as big as he thinks he is. His attitude reminds me a lot of the Yorkshire Terrier, he's just a bit bigger.

Spunky can be a hoot to take out to the park. Most think he is adorable but there is a good number of joggers that are completely annoyed at his yapping and nipping at their heels. Even with a leash, he can be very determined to make his presence known. He'll tug and run this way and that as he is constantly on the alert to sound an alarm. He particularly doesn't like other male dogs and isn't afraid to go after their nose if they get too close.

He does have his "cute" moments. He loves to watch Wheel of Fortune with us. But unlike some of the smaller terriers, he prefers his own ottoman closer to the television, over sitting in our lap. Once the show is over, he's done with TV and off he goes.

Another characteristic difference between him and his smaller cousins is Spunky will shed his undercoat about twice a year whereas the others don't shed their coats. I try and keep him groomed regularly to control the hair and make sure his diet is veterinarian recommended. Spunky can get a little picky when it comes to eating, though.
