An Owner's Anatolian Shepherd Description
Angel is a guardian: she watches over my sheep when they are grazing away from me. She was never meant to be a guard dog and I never wanted one. But because of her possessive nature of my property she is, by far, the most valuable resource I have in keeping my sheep safe. Wild dogs and other predators generally stay away when she is on duty. You can tell she loves her job. She is independent and even though she's obedient, she knows her business and really doesn't want any direction from me on how to do it.

Angel knows how to stay calm, which allows her to assess each situation and decide on how best to keep the sheep safe, whereas many dogs will just take off barking and chasing would-be intruders, upsetting and scattering the flock, Angel often just nonchalantly strolls in the direction of the troublemaker and throws an intimidating stare in their direction, diverting trouble without making a sound.

Angel works alone and generally doesn't tolerate other dogs getting in the way. She's loyal and can be affectionate if and when she is in the mood. But her natural instinct to watch over the sheep always takes priority over me. Of course, when the sheep are in the pasture and the dogs are on the prowl, that's exactly how I want her priorities to be. But once the sheep are safely penned, Angel will lay at my feet by the fireplace and keep me company through the winter.

Since I got this wonderful dog, my only loss was a sheep who died of pneumonia, certainly nothing to do with Angel. but she was restless for days after. I believe she took the loss personally, since it was on her watch.

Introduction

Also known as the Kangal Dog, this breed of ancient lineage is used to protect sheep in its native country of Turkey. These dogs are possessive towards family, property and livestock but are gentle with family and children. Strangers should be properly introduced to these dogs, and socialization from an early age is important. Anatolians are athletic and have been clocked at speeds of 35 mph. Minimal grooming is needed except during seasonal shedding when thorough brushing is required. These dogs weigh 80 to 100 lbs. and stand 27-29" at the shoulders.

Living Area

Anatolian Shepherds are generally not well suited for apartment life since they need a lot of activity and exercise to. Their best fit is in a large, secure, fenced-in yard. They need a lot of fresh air and exercise to stay healthy, and will become easily bored and destructive if they are kept indoors.
