An Owner's American Water Spaniel Description
I had heard a great deal about this dog before I actually decided get one. From what other owners had told me and from talking with breeders I was prepared for a quality retriever. Not only did Coco prove to be that, but more. Coco does it all with equal enthusiasm. She loves to hunt birds and fur, as well as, fish and she doesn't seem to care which.

She's proved herself to be a trust-worthy companion and only showing signs of being temperamental as she has grown old. Intelligent, we never had to be harsh or overly firm in her training. She always seemed willing to be especially attentive and obedient to me. Of course, she and I have spent many days together and although she gets along well with the kids, she's mine and she knows it.

Coco doesn't have to hunt to be content. She's just as happy palling around with me, as long as I'm outdoors. At the end of the day, she's happiest if she was able to get some physical exercise. When she was a pup she developed some undesirable traits, like excessive barking, possessiveness, especially around the kids and general run-a-muck of the household. I determined then that she would greatly benefit from some obedience training. I never regretted that decision.

Coco is a very sensitive dog and it has been necessary to train the kids just as much as her. She needed a home that was calm and quiet. Yelling at her or the use of a harsh hand was simply not an option in raising her. She developed into a very confident and loving companion that the whole family enjoys.

Introduction

The American Water Spaniel is the state dog of Wisconsin. In part, these dogs are descended from the Irish Water Spaniel and were developed into their present form during the 1920s. Rarely are these dogs worked outside of North America. The lean, light body allows American Water Spaniels to accompany the hunter in his canoe or skiff. They have a tight, curly, water resistant coat. They weigh 25-45 lbs. and stand 15-18" at the shoulders.

Colors

Liver or chocolate in color with or without small white patches on the chest and white on the toes.

Living Area

Can adjust to a small, indoor space if provided with long, frequent and intensive exercise sessions. The breed does best in a larger, fenced yard to self-exercise and be outdoors.

Recognized By
