These Devoted Dogs
Are Happiest When Swimming!
According to the American Kennel Club, this powerful water retriever began along the Chesapeake Bay, and it is named the state dog of Maryland. As a medium-sized breed, this strong dog displays unusual power and resiliency in its instinctive abilities. With an outer coat that is short and wavy covering a thick wooly under coat, its eyes are yellowish or amber. To keep the dog camouflaged within its work environment, its colors include all shades of brown, red-brown and muted hay, but there is a standard preference for solid colors with a permissible white coloring on their feet and chest. Both their harsh exterior coat and their dense undercoat of wool are oily, ensuring water repellency. This breed of dog has a broad round head with a medium muzzle and stop. They have thin lips, with small ears that hang down; a tail of 12-15 inches in length; straight, sturdy forelegs; strong hindquarters; and webbed toes which facilitate their excellence in swimming.
It is no surprise that this breed loves water. It is a strong-muscled dog and the largest of the retriever breeds. It stands 21-26 inches at the withers and weighs an average of 55-75 lbs. The coat’s waterrepellency is a distinguishing characteristic of the breed that allows it to successfully retrieve wild ducks from the icy Chesapeake Bay.
Another unique feature is the sway in the dog’s back which allows its spine to absorb shock as it breaks through the ice when retrieving ducks. The dog has a happy, bright, and loving disposition. Exceptionally intelligent and quite adept at working independently, it makes a great hunting dog as well as tracker, and search-and-rescue dog. It is very athletic and needs considerable exercise. It is a great choice for a family that is active and likes outdoor water activities.
During the winter of 1807, there was an English shipwreck off the Maryland coast where everybody was saved, including two dogs which were given to a dog-loving family. The local retriever breeds mated with that pair and the result was the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, which proved to excel in hunting. Careful further breeding as years passed resulted in an extraordinary retriever combining incredible endurance and enthusiasm. Outstanding in tracking and obedience as well as in field trials, hunting tests, and retrieving, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is capable of bringing back an average of 200 ducks daily despite frigid water temperatures. They are similarly excellent family companions.
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are sweet-tempered, gentle and loyal dogs. While they are courageous, affectionate, and responsive to training, they can be slow learners. These devoted dogs are ideal in the company of children and are happiest when swimming and retrieving. This breed can also live peacefully with cats who share their daily surroundings, but tend to chase any who do not reside within the household.
All colors of brown from tawny or sand through to dark brown with red or mahogany highlights. A small amounts of white on the chest and feet is acceptable.
Outdoors or indoors, medium to large yard.
