The Boerbel is the guardian dog of South Africa. Believed to have sprung from mastiff -type dogs brought by early settlers, there are drawings of dogs similar to the Boerbel that show this breed with colonists throughout the formative years of the nation. When it was in danger of disappearing in the modern age, a group of farsighted breeders brought together the remaining examples of these majestic dogs. Their efforts salvaged the breed and created the vibrant Boerbel of today.
